Planetary habitability is the potential size of the planet or natural satellite to support life. Life may grow by itself on a planet or natural satellite, or may be transferred from another planet, a theoretical process known as panspermia. Because of the existance of extraterrestrial life is uncertain existence, most planetary habitability is the calculation of the conditions on Earth and the characteristics of the Sun and solar system that seems to favor living things to thrive-especially the factors that sustains living beings are complex, multicellular organisms, not only the simple, unicellular organism. Research and theory in this case is a component of planetary science and the emerging discipline of astrobiology.

Necessary condition for the existence of life is a source of energy, and the idea of planetary habitability suggests that other criteria of geophysical, geochemical, and astrophysical must be met before an astronomical body could support life. In the NASA Astrobiology plan, major habitability criteria have been defined as "broad areas of water, good conditions to be attached complex organic molecules, and energy sources to sustain metabolism."

In determining the potential habitability of a planet or satellite, the study focused on the composition, nature of the orbit, the atmosphere, and the chemical interaction potential. Important characteristics of the star it includes a mass and luminosity, variability of stable, high level of metals. Planet and satelitterestrial or rocks with Earth-like chemical potential is sometimes considered an alternative biochemical and other types of astronomical bodies.
